Tips for Selecting Hand Tools

Hand tools can be easily judged for quality, long life and usefulness if you just learn a few simple rules. Here are some tips and tricks of the trade for making great selections without breaking the bank.

Look for add-ons and gadgets

The reason that all the great tools never change is they were already perfect.  Improvements to grip, contact surface toughness and ergonomics can be very useful and add to the life of the tool. Big changes like changeable bits, reversible shafts, and ratchets contained in small handles are not true improvements. These kinds of changes only make the tool have weak points that are bound to fail in anything other than light and occasional use.

For instance a hand screwdriver that has ¼ inch hex recess and magnet in the end of the shaft and multiple bits with a ratchet in the handle has inherent problems. The shaft is weakened because the hollow to accept the bit is very thin walled and has a tendency to warp and enlarge allowing the bits to wobble.  This can also make alignment difficult. The ratchet in the handle doesn’t last because the parts are so small and inexpensively made even the torque an average person can apply with one hand is enough to cause failure.

Look for tolerances in manufacturing

Hand tools with moving parts are especially subject to failure. Just because a tool has a nice chrome or matte finish does not mean it is a quality tool. Two-part hand tools such as hand pliers and water pump pliers can be judged by how smoothly they operate without being loose. If one handle can be twisted in comparison to the other than you can bet the tool is of low quality.  Unfortunately tool manufacturers are all too familiar with the average consumer’s weaknesses.  If the packaging is attractive enough and the appearance of the tool is expensive, they know they can skimp on the actual quality of the tool itself.

Look for comparisons between two tools

Many times you can quickly tell the difference in the true quality of a tool by comparing it side by side with another brand.  A ratchet wrench, for instance, should have very little turn in the driving shaft before it clicks into the next locking tooth.  Turn two ratchets upside down and turn the drive observing how far it turns before it clicks.  Pick another and perform the same test.  If one is higher quality than the other, the difference will be obvious.  Take some time to play with the tools in the store before you decide which one to buy.

Work Gloves For Sensitive Hand

Our hand plays a vital role in our daily lives. When we are working specially in handling hazardous or sharp materials we should protect them by wearing work gloves. There are different kinds of leather work gloves for different types of application. One application is handling oil based chemicals such as paint, insecticides, kerosene, gasoline, diesoline and etc. Working with these kinds of chemicals can cause our skin to irritate and itchy burns. Nitrile coated gloves or disposable nitrile gloves are ideal in these kinds of jobs. Unlike ordinary latex or rubber gloves, nitrile gloves don’t irritate skin and are recommended for people who have allergy to rubber. Most nitrile gloves are puncture resistant so it will not easily break if accidentally stab by sharp objects. Best to use while painting your house or car body repairs. For multi-purpose use a leather or synthetic work gloves is needed. You can buy them in leather reinforced jersey gloves or pure leather gloves. Power Tools Vs. Hand Tools

Stop wasting your time with using hand tools when you could be using power tools that are faster and more efficient. Hand tools have been around for centuries and are simple but slow. Today we still have hand tools but they are old technology and out dated. Hand tools were all that we had until power tools were introduced to the public. Power tools are what built the United States and all of the cities in it were all constructed with the help of some kind power tool.

Power tools revolutionized how we did our everyday tasks. Power tools enabled us to get more work done with less user fatigue than compared to using hand tools. Power Tools allowed a person to get the job done 2 to 3 times faster than compared to using hand tools which allows more time to do what you want and not chores or work. Why pound nails with a hammer when you can use a nail gun. Why turn wrenches and ratchets when you can use air tools and finish in half the time and half the effort. I even know people that only take their cars to mechanics that use power tools because power tools will get the job done in half the time saving you money.

Then Power Tools went to the next level by going cordless. Cordless power tools allowed a person to go anywhere and everywhere with no cords attached. No more dragging around extension cords or being limited to working next to an outlet. Today’s technologies have made power tool batteries with 2 times more capacity and only 1 hour charge times. With 2 batteries and a charger, a person could work all day without running out of battery power. Cordless power tools work great for working on roofs because extension cords tend to want to slide off the roof or they are not long enough and won’t reach your work area. Little things like this take up a lot of time and will slow your productivity down.

So when are you going to put down the screw driver and pick a power drill. If you’re looking to use power tools on the job I recommend Name Brands such as DeWalt, Makita, Milwaukee, or Skil. If you want a power tool to use around the house I recommend Non-Name Brands because their a third of the price of name brands and still are just as good. Our whole community depends on power tools anywhere from cordless drills to impact wrenches we all depend on them and most of us use them everyday.
