What do the measurement numbers mean on air power tools?

I’m looking to buy some pneumatic tools for the garage and am trying to come up to speed on their details. I noticed when buying that there are different sizes of “drives” for the air ratchets, impact wrenches and drills, such as 1/4″, 1/2″, 3/8″ and 1″. I’m guessing that this refers to the width of the primary (“drive”?) gear inside the tool? And for the air hammers, what does BPM mean and why do the heavier duty models have a lower BPM number? Thanks.
Ok thanks! Pretty obvious answer; but I tend to make things harder than they are….

I need a quiet air compressor, which is best?

Hi,

I’m in the market for an electric air compressor, and am having a hard time selecting the right model for me. Can you help point me in the right direction, or give me a few suggestions?

My preferences in order are:

1. Noise the lower, the better. This trumps all other preferences.

2. 5+ CFM at 90 PSI

3. I would prefer oil-free, but not if oiled compressors are 10dBA difference quieter.

4. Don’t mind / would prefer a large 15-30 gallon tank.

This is for home garage use air impact wrench, filling car tires, nail gun, possibly paint in the future: hence the 5+ cfm. I have an HOA to worry about, and I’m concerned as to my neighbors who share a common wall with my garage, so noise level is my top concern. I’d like to spend about $300-400, however, if there are models you would recommend which make a difference as to my requests, then I’d consider spending up to about $500 (or more if I’m simply requesting what is not possible). I’ve seen a DeWalt ( http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200331365_200331365 ) 15gal, ~5cfm, 78dba online, which was called “quiet”, but I’m hoping there are others which are quieter.

Thanks!
Monic,

That’s a little bigger than I’m looking for ideally. It would be okay, however, it doesn’t list the noise anywhere, which is my whole reason for posting this…?…
I should add… i’m looking to keep it standard 120V as well… thanks.
renpen,

Thanks for your response. I plan on building an enclosure with acoustical insulation, and a bathroom fan incorporated in. Do you know of any air compressors that are better than others? Should I definitely get an oilled compressor? The dewalt i listed above, is *supposed* to be on the quiet end, but i googled around and apparently you can get them down to 30dba (opposed to 78). I’m just not sure if that’s for the $3-4K and up compressors….

pneumatic or cordless electric tools?

So I bought myself a 26 gallon air compressor & it came with a free impact wrench & I picked up an air ratchet. So far i like it allot but have not realy used the tools except to test them real quick & hear that cool sound.

I’m going to be working on my motorcycle mostly but I bought a new shed to store it in and I am building up my tool collection from scratch just so i have them.

Anyway my delima now is I have no power tools other than what i already mentioned and am looking to buy some. I am wondering if i should just buy all air tools now since i have the compressor of if I should buy corless 18v power tools. For instance i know I need a drill. maybe a saw, dremel, grinder, sander. The basic stuff.

What do you think i should do?
Is pneumatic better for some tools but cordless better for others?

Would cordeless be more practical & versitale, or should i utilize my compressor since i have it.

I always go over the top & was looking at a nice Dewalt combination cordless 18v combo set. I want good stuff, is 18v from a major brand like Dewalt good enough for weekend warrior? I know the air tools pack a nice punch so thats why I am confused on which direction to go. Do they sell air tools in nice combo sets too that arn’t crap?

Thanks!

How do you relocate a Pressure Relief Valve on water heater?

I bought a new water heater, the water heater came with the relief valve on the side. The plumbing is set up for a top mount.

The valve came out fine, but I cant get the plug outta the top mount location. I got the right size socket and actually broke my 1/2 socket wrench trying to get it off. Is there something im not doing? Do I just need more muscle? An impact wrench? or move the pluming for a side mount?
That is what it is….
The directions say that you can relocate if optional location is there, doesnt give specifics on that tank. Looks like im moving plumbing
the piping doesnt go down the side of the tank, it comes outta the wall above where the side mount is, the piping that is there was for a top mount

I have an air ratchet that blows air out the exhaust instead of the head turning. Any knowledge appreciated.?

I’m a novice with air tools. This is an Ingersol Rand 107 Xp air ratchet. Air just blows through the exhaust when the trigger is depressed. I am not sure if it’s the ratchet or my compressor doesn’t create enough cfm to operate it. My impact wrench works fine which leads me to think the ratchet is the problem. Any advice and knowledge about air tools will be greatly appreciated. Thanks………….Dave

Toro self propelled mower. Is the blade held on by a normal (right tight) bolt?

If it is, then it’s jammed pretty darn tight because I broke a socket trying to loosen it with a torque wrench ( by turning left )!

I’m about to take an impact wrench to it, but I need to be sure!
